Solar Water Heating details (made easy)

The basic plumbing layout of the system is fairly simple and compact. Insulated 3/4" Type L copper pipe runs between the solar collector and the storage tank, and the rest of the components are attached to your tank and can be assembled fairly easily into a compact unit. The two vertical pipes shown in the photo go directly to the collectors on the roof.

The tank temperature sensor is inserted in the "aquastat" well on your tank, as shown below.

The heart of the plumbing layout is shown below, it includes the "fill and purge" station, Pressure relief valve, #30 expansion tank, pump, and a pressure gauge. The unit shown below is attached directly to the exchanger coil on your storage tank, or attached to your flat plate exchanger depending on how you want to build your system.

When you install a "closed system" air can not enter you system therefore "black" pipe can be used to reduce your installation costs. Do not use galvanized pipe because it reacts with Cryotec and other glycol anti freeze solutions. Do not use PEX because temperatures can exceed the allowable temperature range of PEX pipe. Unions should be used often; they can be very helpful in case you need to snug up a fitting or replace a component.

The circulator pump can a TACO 007 if the pipe run is simple, the TACO 00R-MSF1-IFC 3- speed pump can fine tune your installation, you should look for 1 gpm per panel on your flow rate, on the bigger systems the TACO 009 pump is often used. Note flow direction on the photo is upward returning to collector. The heated water go directly into the exchanger on your tank.

If you use a pump with an internal check valve an isolation valve would have to be installed between the fill and purge valves to purge the system.

Typical Roof flashing setup, shown above install 2" PVC cap to terminate PVC.
